SUPERVISORY AND FIRST-LINE MANAGEMENT

Duration: 12 weeks

Increasing demands are placed on supervisors in terms of workforce diversity, legislation and the 4th Industrial Revolution, as well as teamwork. The various functions and skills required of a supervisor/first-line manager is covered by this short-course in order to facilitate the effective transition into this role.

Learning outcomes

  • Clarify how supervisors’ function within the organisation’s structure and first level of management in terms of planning, organising, leading and controlling;
  • Outline the roles that successful supervisors/first-line managers play to meet the needs and expectations of their staff and the organisation at large
  • Demonstrate an ability to set and achieve goals through problem-solving and decision-making processes
  • Describe a number of approaches to improve the effectiveness of the human resource function of the supervisor/first-line manager
  • Outline current managerial issues impacting the supervisor/first-line manager in terms of organisational culture, ethics, social responsibility, conflict, etc.

Admission Requirements:

  • Twenty-three years of age.
  • Three years business/work experience.
  • Senior certificate or NQF 4 equivalent.

Assessments

Two online assessments (assignment or test) will be administered during the offering of this course and feedback will be provided to students to ensure formative development.

A BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN FOR YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR INDUSTRY AND/OR YOUR DEPARTMENT

Natural and man-made incidents, crises and disasters can seriously disrupt business, and even lead to the failure of businesses.

This programme is aimed at management or employees wishing to improve business systems, structures and resources sustainability. The course provides an overview of the most important business continuity functions and will assist in developing the essential skills needed to manage a business continuity plan.

  • Understand institutional arrangements or capacity to deal with business risk.
  • Be able to calculate the risk factor and impact on the business or business unit.
  • When understand of your risk and capacity there will be better understanding of what to do to prevent negative incidents or mitigate the negative impact thereof.
  • Recovery of the impacted functions is crucial for the continuation of the business therefore a rapid contingency is needed.
  • In addition, the programme will assist in developing the essential skills needed to manage all business and department’s functions and risk more effectively and profitably.
